granivore
A granivore (grán-uh-vor) is an animal that primarily eats seeds or grains. Many native birds, including sparrows, finches, juncos, and towhees, are granivores that rely on the seeds of native grasses, forbs, and shrubs, especially in late summer and fall. These birds are essential to plant reproduction, dispersal, and food web support, particularly in grasslands, meadows, and chaparral margins. By consuming and redistributing seeds, granivores play a crucial role in maintaining the diversity and resilience of native plant communities.
