Periwinkle (Vinca major) is an aggressive invasive plant in the San Lorenzo Valley. This plant grows as a thick ground cover that chokes out native plants and prevents sunlight from reaching seedlings along the ground. Vinca is especially dangerous when grown along streams and creeks, as water may cause vines to break off and float downstream. These fragments can resprout, causing a new invasion. It is also a host to the bacterium Pierce’s Disease, which spreads by insects and eventually blocks the movement of water in the xylem. Due to its rapid and destructive nature, vinca will change the ecology of an area and in severe cases, alter hydrology. Do your part to protect the SLV, do not plant periwinkle in your garden, and remove any that you come across.

The Santa Cruz Mountains are considered to be one of the most important and varied ecosystems in the world. The area is also threatened by invasive species. The San Lorenzo Valley Native Habitat Restoration Program focuses on the removal of these invasives in order to protect our wonderful native flora and fauna.

This photo is of a Ceanothus Silkmoth (Hyalophora euryalus). Found along the west coast from Canada to Southern California these moths play an important role in pollination. When they land on a plant pollen collects on the moths hair and is deposited when they land on another. Moths are one of the only pollinators active at night and without them other insects would have to do a lot more work.
By planting Ceanothus, Coffeeberry, Manzanita, Ribes, Douglas Fir, Madrone, and Alders, we can provide food to the catepillars and allow these creatures to continue their vital work!

The San Lorenzo Valley Native Habitat Restoration Program is created to enhance and sustain the health of the natural environment by increasing the diversity of the native flora and fauna within the Santa Cruz Mountains. Our program has been working to improve native habitat on private and public lands through the eradication of invasive non-native plants. This will create expanding corridors of native habitat across the San Lorenzo Valley. The project strives to integrate the needs of the environment with the needs of the community.
With a unique focus on the San Lorenzo Valley, the program provides the community with the knowledge, background, and techniques needed to restore and preserve this unique ecosystem.
