orthopterans
A group of insects that includes grasshoppers, crickets, and katydids. These insects are characterized by their jumping hind legs, chewing mouthparts, and, in many species, sound-producing abilities (stridulation).
Most orthopterans are plant-eaters that play a key role in native ecosystems by feeding on vegetation and serving as food for birds, reptiles, and small mammals.
In native gardens and habitats, orthopterans serve as key links in the food web, facilitating the transfer of energy from plants to insect-eating wildlife.
