insectivorous
Feeding on insects; commonly used to describe animals—especially birds—that consume caterpillars, beetles, flies, or other insect prey.
Insectivorous (in-sek-tí-vuh-rus) species play a key role in ecosystems by helping control insect populations and supporting food web balance. In the Santa Cruz Mountains, insectivorous birds such as the Chestnut-backed Chickadee, Wilson’s Warbler, and Pacific Wren rely heavily on insects, particularly during nesting season when they feed young with soft-bodied larvae and caterpillars.
Including native plants that support a high diversity of insect life helps sustain these insectivores and strengthens overall biodiversity.
