flight

In butterfly and moth ecology, a flight refers to the period when adults are active—emerging from pupae, flying, mating, and laying eggs. The number of flights varies by species and by climate. Some are univoltine (one flight per year), while others are multivoltine (several per year). For example, the Common Buckeye (Junonia coenia) is multivoltine in the San Lorenzo Valley, producing multiple flights from spring through fall as long as host plants like California Bee Plant provide fresh foliage for caterpillars.
