accipiter

A group of hawks built for hunting in dense woodland rather than open sky. Short, rounded wings and a long tail give accipiters the agility to pursue small birds through tight vegetation at speed. In the San Lorenzo Valley, Cooper’s Hawk and Sharp-shinned Hawk are the two resident accipiters — present year-round and most actively hunting the shrub layer in late winter and early spring when small birds concentrate around early-blooming natives.
