lepidopteran
An insect belonging to the order Lepidoptera, which includes butterflies and moths. Lepidopterans undergo complete metamorphosis, with four life stages: 1. egg, 2. larva (caterpillar), 3. pupa (chrysalis or cocoon), and 4. adult.
Native lepidopterans play a vital role in ecosystems as:
- Pollinators (especially butterflies and some moths)
- Larval herbivores that feed on specific host plants
- Prey for birds, bats, amphibians, and other insectivores
Healthy native plant communities support diverse lepidopteran species by providing both nectar sources for adults and host plants for caterpillars.
