habitat succession

The natural process by which plant and animal communities change over time in a given area.

Habitat succession typically begins with pioneer species in disturbed or bare ground. It progresses through stages, often from grasses to shrubs to mature forests, until reaching a more stable, long-term community called a climax community. This process is essential to habitat recovery and ecosystem resilience.
