• During the first summer, water every 2–3 weeks, with a deep soak that penetrates the root zone
• After the first year of growth, one deep soak in late summer during extreme drought to prevent stress, but only if leaves flag heavily.
• Pruning & Size Control
  • Lightly shape after bloom to control spread.
• For major renewal, prune in late fall or early spring — always cut back to green growth, never into bare wood.
• In gardens, prune lightly after bloom to keep size closer to 3–4 ft wide and reduce deadwood for Fire Wise planting.
• On dry rocky slopes, plants may be left unpruned to spread naturally outward with age.
• Decide your approach: prune spent blooms for a lighter second flush of flowers (visual appeal + some nectar), or leave them to form seeds that feed birds. To have both, pair with late-blooming companions such as California fuchsia or Buckwheats to extend nectar while the sage sets seed.
• Leave stems standing through winter for insect habitat; cut back in early spring after insects have emerged.
• Mulch with its own leaf litter (“chop-and-drop”) to support soil life, suppress weeds, and help retain soil moisture.
• In clay soils, improve drainage by backfilling the root ball area with a mix of 1/3 crushed rock (¼″ gravel), 1/3 coarse compost, and 1/3 native soil. Plant slightly high so water drains away from the crown. This extra step will improve the health and growth of the plant.

• Although not native to the SLV, it is highly compatible, thriving in local hot, dry conditions.
• Acts as a keystone shrub, bringing structure, habitat, and ecological richness where few other shrubs succeed.
• Broad, silver-green canopy adds contrast in mixed plantings, draws hummingbirds and long-tongued native bees.
• Allelopathic (releases natural compounds that suppress the growth of competing plants, including invasive annual grasses).
• Aromatic foliage is deer-resistant
• Its silver leaves are slow to ignite, making it fire-wise for defensible-space plantings.
• Long-lived and deeply drought-tolerant, it thrives in poor soils and offers a dependable anchor for SLV gardens.

These associations replicate natural dry-slope communities, supporting soil health, seasonal fluctuations, and biodiversity.
