• For Festuca idahoensis, fall planting works best because the soil holds autumn rain and sets roots before the summer drought.
• After seeds drop in late summer, lightly clip the spent flowering stalks to reduce thatch and stimulate new growth, while leaving the green basal foliage and some stems for habitat.
• Festuca idahoensis is a cool-season bunchgrass whose green basal foliage burns quickly and at low heat, reducing fire intensity while allowing the crowns to survive and resprout. For firewise landscaping, it is best suited to the 5–30 ft zone rather than the first 5 feet immediately abutting a structure.
