The Bramble That Won’t Let Go

Every August, the creeks, roadsides, and abandoned corners of the San Lorenzo Valley fill with glossy blackberries. They're free, abundant, and genuinely delicious. For many people, blackberry picking is simply part of summer.
That abundance is exactly the problem.
The plant producing those berries is Himalayan Blackberry (Rubus armeniacus). Despite the name, it isn't from the Himalayas at all. It is native to Armenia and northern Iran. Introduced to North America in 1885 as a promising agricultural crop, it escaped cultivation with spectacular success. Today, it blankets millions of acres across the Pacific Coast and is considered the most invasive non-native shrub in western North America. California's Invasive Plant Council gives it its highest ecological impact rating.
Once established, Himalayan Blackberry is remarkably difficult to remove because it spreads in two entirely different ways—and uses both simultaneously.
Its arching canes can grow 20 to 40 feet in a single season. When the tip of a cane touches the ground, it often roots immediately, creating a new plant that remains connected to the original until it becomes established. A single thicket slowly walks across the landscape this way, expanding outward year after year.
At the same time, birds and mammals do the long-distance work. Quail, robins, thrushes, raccoons, gray foxes, coyotes, squirrels, and many other animals eagerly consume the berries. The seeds pass unharmed through their digestive systems and are deposited far from the parent plant, often with improved chances of germination.
The plant is equally adaptable to where those seeds land. It thrives in sunny openings but tolerates heavy shade, survives seasonal flooding as well as summer drought, and grows happily along streams, roadsides, old fields, forest edges, and disturbed ground. Few habitats in the San Lorenzo Valley are unsuitable
A Patient Invader
Blackberry doesn't need immediate success.
Its seeds are protected by an exceptionally hard coat that typically requires the natural rhythm of a warm summer followed by a cold winter before germination begins—conditions the San Lorenzo Valley provides almost every year. Even then, many seeds remain dormant in the soil for years, forming a persistent seed bank waiting for the next opportunity.
Fire can provide exactly that opportunity.

While flames destroy the canes above ground, the underground crown and regenerative roots usually survive. The burned area suddenly has more sunlight, less competition, and exposed soil—ideal conditions for vigorous resprouting and mass seed germination. Fire doesn't eliminate Himalayan Blackberry. More often, it resets the competition in its favor.
Changing the Landscape
The damage caused by Himalayan Blackberry isn't simply that it occupies space.
Blackberries rarely kill mature trees. Instead, it changes everything that grows beneath them. Wherever conditions allow, it replaces diverse native plant communities with nearly impenetrable walls of thorny cane.
Its dense canopy intercepts most of the sunlight before it reaches the forest floor, preventing native shrubs, grasses, wildflowers, and tree seedlings from establishing. Over time, a diverse understory becomes a nearly continuous mass of blackberry, reducing biodiversity while quietly reshaping the forest.
Along streams and steep slopes, these thickets can also conceal erosion. A creek bank may appear stable beneath a blanket of blackberry, while the soil underneath is actively failing.
Not Entirely the Villain
Ecologically, Himalayan Blackberry presents a genuine dilemma.
As the biodiversity of native plants disappears, its berries provide food for dozens of birds and mammals, while its thorny thickets offer nesting sites and protective cover. During restoration work around the New Felton Library and the adjacent Kirby Street Treatment Plant, CCC and AmeriCorps crews discovered wood rat nests tucked safely inside dense blackberry patches.
This is one reason removal requires thoughtful planning rather than simple eradication. Wildlife often comes to depend on blackberries where native habitat has already been lost. Removing large infestations can temporarily reduce both food and shelter, even though long-term restoration ultimately benefits a much wider range of species.

Why Removal Is So Difficult
Himalayan Blackberry defeats many well-intentioned restoration projects because it responds to disturbance almost as well as it responds to neglect.
The obvious solution—digging out the crown—isn't always the best one.
A mature blackberry crown can have multiple roots extending many feet in every direction. Leaving fragments of these roots behind doesn't necessarily weaken the plant. Instead, individual root pieces can produce entirely new crowns, sometimes multiplying the infestation.
Cut canes create problems of their own. Left on the ground, they may re-root or continue growing wherever they remain in contact with the soil, so cut canes should be removed from the site whenever possible.

For small, accessible infestations, patience often works better than force. Braiding several canes together and repeatedly pruning away new leaf growth gradually exhausts the plant's energy reserves. The process may take several years, but it avoids stimulating vigorous regrowth from digging out crowns and prevents canes and berries from forming.
Repeated mowing can suppress larger patches on level ground, although a single mowing usually has the opposite effect, producing vigorous resprouting from the surviving crown. Like the braiding method, success depends less on the first effort than on the commitment to return again and again until the plant's reserves are exhausted.
After the Blackberry
Once growth in a patch is depleted, years of accumulated leaf litter and decomposed canes often leave behind a surprisingly stable mulch layer that protects the soil from erosion while native plants begin to reappear.
Before replanting the area with native plants, it's worth waiting to see what returns naturally. Continue monitoring carefully for the inevitable blackberry shoots emerging from the persistent root system and long-lived seed bank.
Winning Takes Longer Than Losing
Himalayan Blackberry didn’t conquer the San Lorenzo Valley in a single season, and it won't be removed in one either.
Successful restoration doesn’t end when the blackberry is gone. It begins there.
Successful restoration begins with the thoughtful removal of Himalayan Blackberry, but it succeeds through monitoring, persistence, and allowing native ecosystems to recover. Only then does the landscape begin to recover.
Blackberry eradication rewards patience and persistence.
It punishes shortcuts.
The battle isn‘t simply against one shrub.
It's against a strategy that has been remarkably successful for more than a century.
Fortunately, nature has a strategy of its own. Given time, patience, and continued stewardship, even the largest thickets can be replaced by native forests, woodlands, and stream corridors that once again belong to the San Lorenzo Valley.
