keystone structure

A keystone structure is a physical feature within an ecosystem that has a disproportionately large impact on biodiversity, such as a mature tree, rock outcrop, downed log, or standing snag.

These structures provide essential habitat, shelter, moisture-retaining microclimates, and other resources that support a wide range of species.

Like keystone species, their presence enhances the ecological complexity, resilience, and long-term stability of a habitat.

In native plant landscapes, a tree such as Valley Oak (Quercus lobata) can serve as a keystone structure due to its size, age, and ability to support a diverse array of nesting birds, insects, fungi, mammals, and epiphytes over many decades.
