herbaceous species

Herbaceous (hur-báy-shus) species are non-woody plants that have soft, green stems and typically die back to the ground at the end of the growing season. Unlike shrubs or trees, they do not develop persistent above-ground woody tissue.

These plants may be annuals, biennials, or perennials. Perennial herbaceous species survive from year to year by regrowing from underground structures such as rhizomes, bulbs, or a caudex.

In the Santa Cruz Mountains, herbaceous species include many native wildflowers, ferns, and grasses that form the foundation of pollinator habitat, provide seasonal food for wildlife, and contribute to soil health and biodiversity.
