frugivore

A frugivore (FROO-jih-vor) is an animal that eats fruit as a significant part of its diet. By consuming and dispersing seeds, frugivores play an essential role in plant reproduction and ecosystem health. In the Santa Cruz Mountains, frugivorous birds such as Cedar Waxwings, American Robins, and Swainson’s Thrushes, and mammals including Merriam’s Chipmunk, feed on native berries, including California Coffeeberry and Blue Elderberry, dispersing seeds that establish new growth and maintain habitat structure and biodiversity.
