Forest floor is the living ground layer of a woodland ecosystem — made up of fallen leaves, needles, twigs, bark, decomposing wood, fungi, soil organisms, and the native plants that grow among them.
In the San Lorenzo Valley, the forest floor is shaped by winter rains and long dry summers. Leaf litter slows evaporation, protects soil from erosion, and helps retain moisture through late summer. Beneath this layer, fungi, microbes, insects, salamanders, beetles, and ground-nesting bees form complex communities that cycle nutrients and support life above.
The forest floor is not debris. It is a habitat.
It serves as a nursery for native seedlings, a shelter for overwintering insects, a hunting ground for birds, and a moisture buffer for amphibians and reptiles. It is also the base of local trophic structure, where native plants convert sunlight into living tissue that feeds insects, which in turn feed birds and other wildlife.
When the forest floor is stripped away, compacted, or replaced by invasive plants, soil life declines, and moisture cycles are disrupted. As this foundational layer weakens, the entire food web above it becomes less resilient.
Protecting the forest floor — by leaving leaf litter in place, minimizing soil disturbance, and supporting native plants — is one of the most important steps in restoring habitat from the ground up.
