detrital pollinator web

A detrital (deh-trí-tuhl) pollination system involves decomposer insects, such as beetles, ants, and other ground-dwelling species that interact with low-growing flowers in moist, organic-rich environments. These insects are typically attracted to the scent, warmth, or microclimate created by decomposing leaf litter, fungi, or damp soil. As they move through the forest floor, they transfer pollen between flowers, contributing to plant reproduction.

This lesser-known pollination web supports certain native plants that bloom close to the ground in shaded forest habitats. In the Santa Cruz Mountains, Wild Ginger (Asarum caudatum) is a prime example—its maroon, ground-level flowers are tucked beneath heart-shaped leaves and are visited by ants and beetles active in the leaf litter.
