French Broom

A Beautiful Invader

Every spring, dense walls of yellow line the roadsides and hillsides of the San Lorenzo Valley. That display is deceptive.

French Broom was introduced to the San Francisco Bay Area in the mid-1800s as a landscape ornamental. It was planted for its beauty by people who had no way of knowing it would become one of California's most damaging invasive plants. It is now established across more than 100,000 acres in California, carries Cal-IPC's most serious invasive rating of High, and has been advancing through the San Lorenzo Valley for generations.

How French Broom Spreads

French Broom's weapon is its seed — and some of the ways it moves through a landscape will surprise you. One plant produces more than 8,000 seeds a year, and as pods ripen through late spring and summer, they burst open explosively — much the way California poppy pods do, flinging seeds up to thirteen feet from the parent plant.  That release is only the beginning.

The most fascinating pathway is by ants. Each seed carries a small fatty appendage called an elaiosome (ee-lay-ó-sohm) — a food reward that attracts ants, which carry the seed back to the nest, consume the appendage, and discard the seed in the loosened soil around the nest entrance. That disturbed soil turns out to be ideal for germination.

Water carries seeds further still. Winter rains wash them from roadside embankments and hillsides down into culverts, many of which flow directly into creeks, where they may eventually enter the San Lorenzo River, moving far beyond where they started.

A Seed Bank That Lasts for Decades

French Broom seeds can remain viable in the soil for decades — some estimates put it at forty years or more, longer than many of us have lived in the valley. Every plant that has ever set seed has added to that seed bank.

What Triggers Germination?

Three things crack open the hard seed coat and trigger germination:

  • Water moving over gravel and soil abrades the coat, allowing moisture in.
  • Soil disturbance — digging, foot traffic, erosion — mechanically cracks it.
  • Fire scarifies seeds en masse, producing explosive germination the following spring.

Most seeds wait. Some germinate every year.  The seed bank is always replenishing — unless removal is sustained long enough to stop it.

Fire Makes It Worse

French Broom is a ladder fuel. Its woody stems and dense evergreen growth create a continuous path that carries fire from the ground into the tree canopy, and its branches accumulate years of dry biomass that burns hot and fast. Fire does not eliminate French Broom. It accelerates germination. A burned hillside can emerge the following spring with seedling density far greater than the stand that burned.

Research suggests that up to 85% of the seed bank can germinate after a fire, making the window immediately following a burn critical. Removal before those seedlings set seed is the only way to prevent the post-fire population from rebuilding the seed bank.

How French Broom Changes the Soil

French Broom belongs to the legume family — the same family as garden peas and lupines. Like its relatives, it fixes atmospheric nitrogen into the soil through a relationship with soil bacteria in its root nodules. In its native Mediterranean region, that nitrogen-fixing capacity supported the plant community with which it evolved.

In the San Lorenzo Valley, the same process works against us. Our native bunchgrasses, forbs, and woodland shrubs evolved in low-nitrogen soils. French Broom loads the ground with nitrogen levels these native plants neither need nor tolerate, shifting soil chemistry in ways that favor its own seedlings and other invasives over the natives we are working to restore.

When Broom is removed and kept in check, natives often return on their own — evidence that the soil, native plants, and seed bank beneath the infestation retain more resilience than the infestation suggests.

When—and How—to Remove It

There are three windows in the plant's growth cycle, and the approach changes with each one.

Before bloom

  • The ideal window. After winter rains have softened the soil, when plants are smaller, and no seed has formed
  • Pull the entire plant, root and all, and leave it on the ground.

After bloom begins, but before pods form:

  • Pull whole plants and pile them away from desirable vegetation.
  • Cover the pile with a tarp if possible.

Once pods are forming

  • Cut seed-bearing branches and bag them immediately.
  • Partially developed pods continue to ripen after cutting.
  • That bag goes in the garbage, not the green waste bin. Santa Cruz County green waste is composted, and French Broom seed survives composting.

Removal alone is not the end of the story. French Broom does not grow well in dense shade, which makes establishing a native canopy one of the most effective long-term controls available. On a property along Clear Creek in Brookdale, French Broom that emerged following the CZU Fire was removed before it set seed. Within two years, dense Ceanothus had established itself in the same location, and further bloom of French Broom has not been observed.

Restoring Together

French Broom has been advancing through the San Lorenzo Valley for generations — and so has the effort to remove it.

At Quail Hollow Ranch, Linda Brodman has led a dedicated group of volunteers in removing French Broom since 2002 — more than two decades of showing up, season after season. "There is a definite decrease in the French Broom at Quail Hollow Ranch," Brodman reports. "We do not see as many broom seedlings of the species; that is a very good sign that the seed bank is being depleted."

That same approach works at any scale. Talk to your neighbors. Find out if they have Broom. Explore working together to remove it. The energy is always higher when people work together, and whole neighborhoods managing their road frontage can close the corridor that keeps Broom moving through the valley.

Every plant pulled before it sets seed is ground held for the natives waiting beneath the surface.
