Ivy in Trees: Where the Real Danger Happens
Two Growth Phases: Juvenile and Adult
Ground ivy is damaging. Aerial ivy is far more serious. Most people know ivy as a ground problem, but it is the ivy in the trees that does the greatest damage and drives the spread by seed.
Ivy has two distinct growth phases — juvenile and adult — and understanding both is essential to knowing where to focus your efforts.
The juvenile phase spreads across the forest floor and climbs any vertical surface it encounters. The juvenile phase persists until climbing cords reach sufficient light — typically high in the tree canopy — at which point the plant transforms entirely into its adult reproductive form.
In the adult phase, the leaves change shape entirely — becoming unlobed and ovate, unrecognizable to many observers as ivy. The cords become woody and shrubby. The plant stops climbing and starts flowering. This is the reproductive phase, positioned at the worst possible place: canopy height, where berries are most accessible to birds and seeds are dispersed farthest into the landscape.
Over time, aerial cords thicken considerably. What began as a slender stem can grow to six to ten inches in diameter, requiring a chainsaw rather than hand tools to cut through. Meanwhile, ivy's aerial rootlets find every crack and crevice in structures and masonry — entering small openings and expanding as they grow, causing significant and costly damage. What appears from a distance to be a picturesque mantle of green is, at close range, a destructive force working steadily into every surface it touches.
The Berry Problem Begins Here
Juvenile ivy — the ground mat — does not flower. It does not fruit. Every berry carried into a riparian corridor, a creek margin, or a shaded forest edge originates from ivy that has reached the adult phase in the canopy. If ivy has climbed a tree on your property, assume it is in the adult phase and producing seed.
Native fruiting shrubs — Toyon, Coffeeberry, Elderberry, and Poison Oak — produce berries nutritionally matched to the birds that evolved alongside them. Ivy berries are a poor substitute, consumed when native options are no longer available. The primary consumers of ivy berries in California are European Starlings — themselves an invasive species. What looks like wildlife use is not an indicator of ecological health. It is evidence of how much of the native fruiting landscape has already been lost. And every berry consumed is a seed dispersed — carried directly into the riparian corridors and creek margins, this valley can least afford to lose.
The Sail Effect
A tree wrapped in ivy is carrying a load it was never designed to bear. Ivy's evergreen canopy adds significant weight to the crown — weight that accumulates year after year as cords thicken and the mat deepens. More critically, that dense, year-round leaf mass acts as a sail. Where a bare or evergreen winter canopy has gaps that allow wind to pass through, ivy fills them — turning every crown it covers into a sail.
The force this creates on the trunk and root system during the powerful winter storms that move through the San Lorenzo Valley is considerable. Trees that might otherwise have stood for decades or centuries become vulnerable to windthrow.
The problem compounds. As ivy envelops branches and twigs, it blocks sunlight from reaching the host tree's own foliage, steadily impairing photosynthesis. An ivy-infested tree may decline for years before it dies — its deterioration is gradual enough that the ivy is rarely identified as the cause. Weakened trees are also susceptible to constriction both above and below ground, where thickening cords can encircle the trunk entirely, restricting girth growth and vascular function.

Aerial Ivy and Fire Risk
Aerial ivy — a cord of dense evergreen foliage running from the forest floor to the crown — fits the structural description of a ladder fuel as defined by the USDA Forest Service and CAL FIRE.
During the CZU Fire, ivy burned as both ground fuel and ladder fuel. Mats ignited from below while aerial cords carried fire up into the canopy — a continuous column of combustion from forest floor to crown, witnessed throughout the San Lorenzo Valley.
Removing ivy from trees on your property is a reasonable and defensible fire preparedness step — one that serves the forest, the watershed, and the food web at the same time.
What Is Lost When Canopy Trees Fall
The old trees of the San Lorenzo Valley are not replaceable on any human timescale. Legacy trees — the large, old-growth remnants that survived the clear-cut and CZU Fire — provide the nesting cavities, structural complexity, and canopy architecture that birds, bats, insects, and other wildlife depend on.
When a legacy tree is lost to ivy — whether through slow decline or sudden windthrow — that loss echoes through the food web for generations. The cavities that housed owls, woodpeckers, and cavity-nesting songbirds are gone. The snag habitat that supports beetle larvae, which in turn supports insectivorous birds, disappears. The canopy gap that opens when a tree falls floods the forest floor with light — and ivy is the first to claim it.
When Ivy Has Climbed a Tree — What to Do
The most urgent step is to cut all aerial cords on every affected tree — do this first, across all trees on the property, before addressing the ground mat.
- Each cut cord begins to die immediately.
- Berry production stops.
- The sail effect begins to diminish.
If this is all that gets done in a season, it is not a small thing — it is the most important thing.
How to Cut Aerial Ivy — Step by Step
- Begin at the base. Using a saw, loppers, or hand pruners, cut all cords completely around the trunk as close to the soil as possible.
- A single cut at the base is sufficient. A cut higher on the trunk risks injuring the bark and is an unnecessary step.
- Once severed from its root system, everything above will die in place.
- Do not pull the cords off the tree. Pulling can strip bark and open wounds that become entry points for disease and decay.
- Ivy's aerial rootlets grip the bark but do not parasitize the tree — they do not extract nutrients from it.
- The damage comes from added weight, moisture trapped against the crown and trunk, competition for light, and the sail effect. Once the cords are severed, that damage stops.
- After cutting, pull the severed cords back to the drip line and remove them from the site.
- Work carefully under all tree canopies. Take particular care under oaks — their surface roots are shallow and especially sensitive to heavy handling and compaction.

What Happens After You Cut
The ivy remaining on the trunk and in the canopy will gradually die once severed from its root system. Leaves may wilt slowly and can take several months — sometimes up to a year — to fully dry and fall.
As the foliage dies back, the sail effect begins to diminish — reducing the windthrow risk with every passing week.
Dead cords may remain attached to the bark for an extended period. Although unsightly, they do not continue harming the tree once severed from the roots.
- Monitor the base of the tree regularly to ensure no cords were missed and none have begun to re-root.
Returning to the Ground Mat
Once aerial cords have been cut on all trees, return to each tree and address the ground mat.
If the ground mat is not addressed immediately, cut cords will resprout from the root system and attempt to climb again. Most people will find themselves here — the aerial work done, the ground mat waiting. When you return and find ivy climbing again, you have not failed. You have bought time, reduced the most serious threats, and created the conditions for the next phase of work.
